What is CBCT?

To explain Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), let us take a look at what a regular CT scan is first. A CT scan, also known as a CAT scan, obtains images of the body by using a combination of rotating x-ray equipment and a digital computer. Cross-section images of the body’s organs and tissue can be captured, providing clear images of various types of tissue. With CT, you can see bone, soft tissue, blood vessels, and muscles, all with a crisp, clear picture.

Uses for CT imaging

The most common use for CT imaging is for diagnostics. CT imaging is primarily used to diagnose cancers, specifically of the lung, liver, and pancreas. CT scans also allow physicians to pinpoint the precise location and size of a tumor and determine if a tumor is spreading.

How CT imaging helps save lives

CT imaging is also used in the planning process for cancer treatments, as well as administering radiation treatments for cancer. CT imaging is proven effective in planning for surgeries, biopsies, and other minimally invasive procedures. Since CT imaging provides such clear and concise images of the body’s internal organs, it can be used to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal disorders or injuries (of internal organs). CT imaging is helpful in detecting life-threatening vascular diseases that could otherwise be undetectable and lead to stroke, renal failure, or death.

What exactly is CBCT?

CBCT is essentially a smaller, faster, and safer version of a regular CT scan. The radiation emitted from CBCT is much less than that of a CT scan. Plus, CBCT scanners fit easily into most any dental practice, without sacrificing much-needed space. It takes less than one minute for a patient to undergo a CBCT, meaning faster results.
