CBCT FAQs

Miami and Coral Gables, Florida

What is CBCT?

A CBCT (Cone-beam computed tomography) is similar to a CAT scan but is a quicker, easier, and safer method of obtaining images of inside your body, including soft tissue, blood vessels, organs, bone, and nerves.

Why do I need a CBCT?

If your dentist recommends a CBCT for you, it is likely to help in diagnosing specific issues or concerns, aid in developing a treatment plan, or help provide you with precise treatment. The reasons for undergoing a CBCT may differ for each patient.

Will my insurance cover a CBCT?

Many dental insurances cover radiography services if ordered by the dentist. If you are concerned whether your insurance will cover a CBCT scan, please discuss this with your dentist. If paying out of pocket, the cost of a CBCT can range from $250-$600.

How do I prepare for my CBCT scan?

No special attire is required but you will be asked to remove any metal objects such as jewelry, glasses, or piercings. For a list of specific guidelines, be sure to contact your dentist.

Is a CBCT scan painful?

No, not at all. You simply stand as instructed while the scan takes place. It takes less than one minute to complete the scan.

My dentist ordered a CBCT for my child, is this safe?

Yes, CBCT is safe, even for children. CBCT does emit a small dose of radiation, but the benefits outweigh the risks, considering how CBCT aids in diagnostics and treatment. Our scanner has the lowest dose for children and is very safe.
